Corlien Varkevisser, born in Katwijk, the Netherlands, in 1937, passed away on 8 December 2017 at the age of eighty. Between 1994 and 2000 she held the Special Chair in Interdisciplinary Research for Health and Development at the University of Amsterdam within the Department of Anthropology. Varkevisser, who worked extensively in Africa, served as an important broker between public health, tropical medicine, and medical anthropology. Her manual on research methods and her work in primary health care and health systems research significantly shaped the field of applied medical anthropology in the Netherlands and beyond. Along with her family, many friends, and colleagues, the MAT community and especially those of us based in Amsterdam will mourn her passing. A full obituary will replace this one in the new year.
